Piratz Tavern in Silver Spring, MD
http://www.piratztavern.com/home.html

It was really just a "Hey, let’s meet up" thing. No real plans other than seeing friends, and I had heard of the place, and thought it was a good time to try it out. It was also a rainy Thursday evening.

The atmosphere is all Pirate-ee and they were playing nothing but Sea Shanties. So far a Win/Win in my book.

We had a table in the back section, next to the bar. It was a bit cramped, but for the amount of people, it was OK.

Now...the food and service side.

What I had was a steak sandwich with fries($7). One of the people there had Cod-Fritters($5) that I tasted. The people across from me had a Stew($14) and a "Steak in a Stone"($24)...Filet served on a sizzling hot stone.

There are some things that I would have done better when it came to the food. All the sandwiches came on the same style 6-8 inch sub/hoagie roll. For my meal, WAY too much bread, and the meat was too thin to really cook to order. Even if you ordered it anything other than blue, the carry-over heat would cook it well done anyway. Toss some cooked onions and peppers and melt some Provolone on top, and it would have been a GREAT Cheese steak, but that’s not what I ordered. Once I pulled the top of the roll off, it tasted good. The seasoning was nice, and well balanced.

The fries were potato wedges, and were cooked well. Not soggy. They used Kosher salt to season the fries. I could also tell that the oil they used was clean because you didn’t taste anything else that was also cooked in it.

The Cod Fritters were basically fried balls of mashed potatoes and mashed cod. Cod has a very mild flavour, as does mashed potatoes. They could have added a touch more salt to it if they made them there. If they bought them pre-made....they might want to think about a new distributor. It came with a side of a romulade or thousand island dressing, which would have just over-powered all the flavours in the fritters.

The stew...called Salmagundi...was a HUGE portion. They do offer a 1/2 portion. From how the people that ordered it described it, they said it was a bit too fatty. Looking at the portion and the price ($14 for a full plate), they are not using the choicest cuts of meat, and they also probably used the fat from the initial searing of the meats as the base for the roux that was used as a thickener. This would defiantly give the dish a much more fatty and richer taste. Unfortunately, I did not taste it, so I can t give you a better breakdown of it, but the people seemed to like it, and did eat all the meat and veggies in the stew. There was a lot of liquid left behind. They also did not serve a side of bread.

The "Steak on a Stone" was probably the best presentation I saw. The steak was cooked correctly to order, and the sides that she had were done well. Only concern was the 400 degree piece of granite on the table.....but I also have that issue with the Fajita pans that most Family style restaurants use as well.

The service was decent but could have been better, but that was not the servers fault. He was the bar-tender, and he was also the only server that we saw. Aside from my group of people, there was also a comparable sized party in the front. At its busiest, they probably had about 40 people between the bar and all the tables. He was running himself ragged until the owner(?) came in and started to lend a hand on serving the food. I think that if they had one server along with the bar-tender, it would have been better.

The drinks were tasty and mixed well. I had a Rum and Coke made with top Shelf Appeltons Estate 12 year old Rum. There was also some Signature drinks like a 3 rum Grog and a 2 rum punch that I didn’t try because I was driving, but the people that ordered them really liked.

I was really surprised at the cost of the meal. For 2 people who had sandwiches, Cocktail drinks, and dessert, we got out of there for $30 before tip. I was expecting closer to $45

Overall, I would give it 3 1/2 out of 5 stars. If you are going there expecting fine dining or "5 Star" service....keep walking. But if you are looking for a neat place to meet up with friends and have some decent food with a neat atmosphere, I would recommend it. If I lived closer, I would probably eat there on a more regular basis.

Current Mood: Stunned
As some of you know....As of about 1:00PM today, I am the father of an 8 pound 14 ounce baby girl named Rowan Grace Siobhan (Pronounced Shivaun). Mom is doing great. Natural, drug-free, non-induced labor. No tearing.

After she was born, she was taken away to get some tests done because she was "Stunned" (Actual words of the Doctor) due to the 5 hours of hard labor. She was crying a bit before they took her away to the nursery, so we knew she was breathing.

We found out that she has some Merconium(sp?) in her lungs(Pee and poo in the amniotic fluid), and an infection. Mel had tested positive earlier for a strain of Strep that can be passed to the baby. The Pediatrician started Rowan on antibiotics for that as well as a broad spectrum of other potential newborn infections. They are doing lab work on her blood, and it will be 48 hours before we get an answer on what infection she does have. She is in the nursery under a little bubble hood where they are pumping a "Drip" of oxygen. She looks like an Astronaut...LOL

Mom will be in the hospital for the next 48 hours because of testing positive, but Rowan wil be in for at least 7 days because of the antibiotic treatment.

Right now, we are all resting and and about ready to pass out. I will post pictures in the next day or 2.

Got the wrong weight...She was 9 pounds 4 ounces.

Despite ricin threat, Seattle gay bars hopping

SEATTLE, Washington (CNN) -- Bartender Chris Daw had plenty of patrons to serve early Saturday at the CC Attle tavern, despite the ricin threats that it and 10 other Seattle gay bars recently received.

The threats -- letters warning that patrons would be poisoned -- appear to be part of the reason business was brisk.

The Bangalore Backlash: Call Centers Return to U.S.

Some Firms See Value in Familiar Voices

Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, December 11, 2008; Page D01
If you prefer a customer service agent who speaks "American," then computer maker Dell has a deal for you.
Catering to consumers put off by the accents of Bangalore, Manila and other call-center hubs around the globe, Dell will guarantee -- for a price -- that the person who picks up the phone on a support call will be, as company ads mention in bold text, "based in North America."

WTF.....They are now gouging people in the US to speak with other people IN THE US!!!!!??!?!?!?! SERIOUSLY. WTF!!!!!!

This is a HUGE issue for me. I work in a Help Desk/Call Center. I have been asked by people "Are you in the US?"...mostly because we do have people with accents.

What pisses me off more is the fact that these companies are moving jobs OUT of the US as our unemployment level rises!

It is my industry that I am worried about here. Right now, the only reason that my company has not gone to contracted phone support...let alone over seas phone support, is because the corporate environment is very "Old School/Old Boys Network". We support our own.

I know several friends that were downsized after the Tech Bubble burst because their jobs in programing or support were farmed over seas to save the company money. I don't know if I could work for a company that intentionally farms out services out of the country. Its not like I would have a job with them anyway!

What I would recommend for our politicians to do is give tax incentives for US Companies stop sending jobs over seas.

It pisses me off so much,. I cant think straight about the topic....Here is a Foamy that explains it best.

Your result for What's your key signature?...

F Major

You're a little flat there, Romeo.

Congratulations, you’re F Major, combining the ease of C Major with just a tint of flatness among it. This key is just perfect for sappy ballads, just ask Paul McCartney! (Yesterday, Michelle AND Hey Jude were all in the key of F!) This key is ideal for pianists who want a touch of softness in their step, or guitarists who happen to like Capoing the first fret. Most instruments have no problem with the key of F, and several horns even have it as their home key. Seriously, though. Try and find a hard rocking punk song in F. Not happening. Punk people tend to stray from such happy keys.

You hopeless romantic, you. Go for it, and play something beautiful on your accordion in F major the next time your girl/guy/Transgendered partner is around, you’ll be amazed by the results. Or maybe you won’t, it really depends on whether or not she/he/it is in the mood. But it can’t hurt!

SONG EXAMPLE:

I gave you three up there, go away.

INTERESTING TIDBIT:

* The Haydn brothers wrote more symphonies in F major than any other set of musical brothers. This was probably in part because there are very few sets of musical brothers who composed symphonies.

You can call me a Grinch, or a Scrooge, or whatever....I am DONE with Christmas Songs.

In my 38 years on this revolving chunk of compressed space dust...I have not heard a truly original Holiday/Christmas song in at least 30 of them. OK...there are some that I like. I really like "Christmas in Sarajevo" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra and even some of the traditional orchestrations of classical Christmas songs and carols and the occasional parody like "The 12 pains of Christmas", or Adam Sandlers "Hanukkah song".

My problem is that we have just taken most of the tunes and remixed and remade and redubbed them so many times, it just drives the joy of listening to them out the window.

Honestly...HOW many times can your listen to the many versions of "Jiggle Bells" and "Oh, Holy Night" before you want to scream. And thats NOT including the Commercials that are using those songs and their particular bastardizations. Don't even GET me started on "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer"...PLEASE!

Right now I am stocking my truck with about 10 to 15 mix CD's, along with 5 or 6 albums, so that way I can get my Christmas Song Fix from WETA Radio 90.9 (Classical Music Station), and then get back to the music I WANT to listen too...instead of the music that is being broadcast.

Also....If ANYONE has a problem with me saying "Happy Holidays"...they can blow it out their butts. I am being general because I want to be. I am NOT secularizing Christmas. I don't believe in it. Its not my Faith. I wouldn't go around saying Merry Kwanza or Happy Hanukkah' to people on the street. If I know your personal belief, I will show respect for you and your faith by wishing you whatever Holiday you celebrate. But for the average person on the street.....I don't know if you are Christian, Islamic, Jewish, Pagan, Hindu, Buddhist or Pastafarian. I would feel like I would insult you if I said Merry Christmas and you weren't Christian, just like I would feel like I insulted you if you WERE Christian and said Blessed Yule.

America is a melting pot of different beliefs, peoples and cultures. If we fight or intentionally try and not change, we would turn into the reason that our for-fathers left for America in the first place. Just because it was celebrated like this 50 years ago DOESN'T mean we have to do it the same way today. Using that thought process, lets go back to 3 TV Stations....They were good enough when I was growing up, and they should be good enough now!

Enough is enough all ready. Put down the "oppressed Christian" act and deal with the fact that we have more then just Christians living in the US and that if you don't change, you will just cause more harm then good.

OK...its just plain WRONG to have to be up at 4:30, so I can be awake, showered, and at the voting location by 5:15, and still be #7 in line.

By the time it opened, there were easily 150-175 people behind me scrolling thru a make-shaft cattle shoot.

I am at work....awake, and am ready to take on the day. I hope its a light one.

OK...I was reading this article regarding the issue of some Health Care Professionals not following thru with prescriptions or doing procedures that are legal because of Religious beliefs.

IMHO....I think those "Professionals" are a bunch of Hypocrites.

They went into a profession that they KNEW would have them supply items or services that could go against their personal beliefs. I am mostly pissed off at Pharmacists that refuse to give out the "Morning After" PRESCRIPTION. If a woman comes in with a prescription for it....WHO IS HE to judge her. By refusing the service, that is what they are doing, whether they admit it to themselves or not.

Also, there are some pharmacists that are refusing to dispense Birth Control Pills because its against their religion. UMmmm......what if it is to treat a different condition that can cause SERIOUS Quality of Life issues? My ex had a condition that when she had her period, all she would do is curl into a ball...and that was ON Birth Control. She had to be off of any Birth Control when she changed her prescription to a different type, and she ended up in the Hospital three times for pain while she waited for the old one to get out of her system before she started the new one. (They required 3 months off the first prescription.)

Now Doctors....They are another story. You can go into specialties that will not conflict with your beliefs. You can go into ENT or Cardiology, and never have to do an abortion. If your specialty is Gynecology, then you might have to rethink your decision.

This is how I see it....If you are a Kosher Jew, you would NOT get a job working at McDonald's Corporate as a "Test Chef" because you would be required to taste all the food you make...which would include Cheese Burgers (Its against the rules to eat Dairy and Meat on the same plate)...Or be a devout Hindu working in a Slaughter House.

They made the conscious decision to go into those fields. It was a CHOICE that they made. No one put a gun to their head and MADE them be a Pharmacist or an OB-GYN. The training that they have to go thru gives them the knowledge to do the procedures, so its not a surprise. During that training, they ARE taught the process on how to do an abortion (For Doctors), and what medicines can cause a reaction for commonly prescribed medications...such as Birth Control Pills....(For Pharmacists).

My personal opinion is if you can't do what your chosen job requires you to do...FOR ANY REASON....Find another profession. Don't put lives at risk and create laws just because you don't want to do your job.

When I was at the Bristol Faire, I was in contact with the Wisconsin State Bird...The Mosquito.

They were VICIOUS! At any given time, I would have 2 or 3 on me, and another 5 or 6 buzzing around my head.

We couldn't find ANY "Off" or Mosquito repellent at any of the local stores we went to.

I was resolved to the fact that I would be itching for days.

Near the end of the first day, someone came walking by saying "This shop has some Mosquito repellent!!" and I followed. By the time I got it and got back stage, Faire was done with and we were packing to head out, and we decided to try it the next morning.

I put some on first thing in the morning, and wasn't bugged by them for almost the entire day!!!!

I HIGHLY recommend this lotion. Its all natural...Read NO DEET!

Normally I don't do product placement.....But this is one that REALLY works for me!

I just found out that a co-worker that I have worked with and known for years, passed away on Saturday.

We never met face to face, but we talked a lot on the phone. He was in Bedford and I am in DC.

I knew that he was sick and on disability, but we would occassionaly email each other, but that sort of dwindled. Work and life tend to get in the way.

I last emailed with him about 2 months back, and he was trying to keep his spirits up.

He was a fun person to talk with and would bend over backwards to help you if it was in his power.

John P....You will be missed, my friend.

Hey [info]neidfyreand [info]fourwindsleah...

This morning I was driving into work and the song "Black Magic Woman" came on the Radio, and I was INSTANTLY brought back to the living room and watching you 2 play "Guitar Hero II" and cursing that song. You went thru it something like 4 times before you went to a different song.

I honestly think I wont listen to that song again without, mentally, putting in the plastic clicking of the toy guitar! LOL

Just thought I would share and thanks for the smiles.
